Founded in 2015 as an innovative start-up and spin-off of the Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna thanks to the intuition of a group of researchers in the Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology (Dipartimento di Farmacia e BioTecnologie, FaBiT), Wellmicro is the first and only Italian company exclusively dedicated to the genetic analysis (DNA) of the human, animal and environmental microbiota, which is based on modern Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) genetic analysis.
The scientific board of scientists and researchers in the field of human and animal microbial ecology has now teamed up with a clinical board of doctors and health professionals to bring added value to the service offered. The Wellmicro team of researchers grasped early on the potential benefits for human health of the study of the microbiota, and began to develop patented research methods and data analysis.
Wellmicro has established itself as the Italian leader in the study of the microbiota thanks to its scientific know-how, expertise in the field of microbiology and the value created for its various stakeholders.
Wellmicro’s vision is inspired by a future in which the role of the microbiota, with its individual-specific characteristics, is one of the pillars of precision medicine.
